Duck Hill Farm

This is our personal website.  There is no theme here.  We aren’t mommy bloggers.  We aren’t political bloggers.  In fact, we don’t think we are bloggers at all.  We are stream-of-conscientiousness writers and we write about things we enjoy.  It can get very random at times.  Sometimes we post five things in a day and sometimes we don’t post for five days.  We do have to make a living and this blog doesn’t really pay the bills so it is what it is.   We’re a two person show here.  We write the code, take the photos and manage the content so there is always something that needs improvement.   We also mow our own lawn and clean our own house and sometimes those things take priority.  When we lose the dogs in the yard or the rug turns white from the animal hair we know it’s time to put down the computer and do some real work.  Those are the weeks you don’t hear from us much.

Our farm is not a working farm.  It’s a hobby farm.   It certainly feels more like a working farm because there is a lot of work involved!  I’ve never had a hobby that required so much work!  But, it is constantly evolving labor of love and at the end of the day it’s a pretty darn good life so we won’t complain about the amount of work.  Work means progress and progress is truly rewarding.

We make haste slowly around the farm.  We are big fans of Thomas Jefferson and do have to remind each other occasionally that it took a lifetime to build Monticello.  Sure, we could hire a landscape crew and a builder and spend thousands of dollars and have a ‘perfect’ American house but then our ‘perfect’ house would look just like everyone else’s perfect house and that’s the antithesis of perfect to us.  We prefer to plan and do the work ourselves.  Not only do we appreciate the finished product more but we learn something every time and as we hit our late, 30s we fully understand that when we stop learning and doing we might as well die.  And, we are not keen on the later so that leaves us with the learning and doing approach to life and it has proven quite fruitful thus far.

Our true passion is historic preservation.  We both enjoy research and spend most of our free time researching and planning future projects around the house.  I enjoy heirloom gardening and preserving things passed down to us.  Todd restores watches, old photographs and tools.  You should visit the Man Cave and see what else he does in his spare time.  We both have a nasty love of junk stores and antiques.  It’s more of an addiction than a love.

We hope you enjoy your time with us.  We’re glad you’re here.

Janet and Todd
